What’s New

  • 2013 Spring Clean Up Schedule
Residents that receive City refuse collection services are eligible to receive Spring Clean-Up pick up each Saturday throughout April. Residents are encouraged to clear out household clutter and place unwanted bulky trash and metal items at the curb on your neighborhood collection date. The City is divided into four collection zones and each zone is assigned a specific Saturday. Metals should be separated from other collection items, as they will be picked up during separate collection.

                Area 1 – Saturday, April 6
                Area 2 – Saturday, April 13
                Area 3 – Saturday, April 20
                Area 4 – Saturday, April 27

There is a $40 delivery charge for a half truck load (3 CY) and full load (6 CY). Please call 703.746.4410 to schedule a delivery. For more information visit alexandriava.gov/YardWaste.
  • Changes to Waste Water Billing and Commercial Refuse Invoicing
Beginning in Fall 2012, Virginia American Water ceased providing third party billing services. As a result, residential and commercial customers will now receive a separate quarterly waste water bill from Alexandria Renew Enterprises (formerly the Alexandria Sanitation Authority). For more information on the residential invoice change, visit the Alexandria Renew Frequently Asked Questions page. A letter was sent to commercial refuse customers informing them of these changes. For more information about the City of Alexandria invoicing for commercial refuse customers, view the City's Frequently Asked Questions, Notification Letter, or Sample Invoice.

Overview

The Solid Waste Division, part of the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES), is committed to providing public services in a professional and courteous manner. It is our goal to provide services that protect the environment and respond to the needs of the community at the least possible cost. Accomplishing this goal requires a cooperative effort between Alexandria citizens, businesses, and City government.

Solid Waste and Recycling Reports and Documents

State of Recycling Report - Fiscal Year 2011 -- The State of Recycling Report was developed to inform residents about the current Solid Waste Division recycling programs, tonnages, and costs and benefits in the City of Alexandria.  This report will be released each August, following the close of each fiscal year.

Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) -- The SWMP was developed in response to regulations adopted by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality in 2001 that require all local Virginia jurisdictions to submit updated twenty-year plans by July 1, 2004. The plan meets the state requirements and lays the groundwork for the future expansion of the City’s solid waste programs.
