2012 Walk Panorama

2012 Walk to Fight Breast Cancer
Saturday, October 20
AMC Hoffman Theatres/Hoffman Center

The 2012 Alexandria Walk to Fight Breast Cancer was held on October 20. Participants had the option of either the 1.5K, 3.5K or 5K walk or run. The Walk raised over $90,000 and approximately 900 people were in attendance.

All proceeds from the Walk benefit the Alexandria Breast Cancer Walk Fund at Inova Alexandria Hospital, which provides mammograms to uninsured women or to those in financial need. Since the Walk's inception in 1994, over 7,000 women have been helped due to the generous support of sponsors, walkers and their pledges.

The Walk is presented by the City of Alexandria and the Inova Alexandria Hospital Foundation and benefits The Alexandria Breast Cancer Walk Fund for Early Detection and Education at Inova Alexandria Hospital.

Buy a T-Shirt & Show Your Support!

Throughout the month of October, you can support the Alexandria Breast Cancer Walk Fund by purchasing a pink Breast Cancer Awareness t-shirt from the Alexandria Fire Department.

All proceeds from the t-shirt sales will be donated to The Fund, and Alexandria Fire Department employees will wear the shirts as part of their uniform in October. Shirt sizes range from Adult Small – 3X; short-sleeve shirts sell for $15 and long-sleeve shirts sell for $20.

Shirts can be purchased online, or at any Alexandria fire station. All proceeds benefit the Walk to Fight Breast Cancer.

Dine Out for The Walk to Fight Breast Cancer

Restaurants, retail stores, spas, and many other businesses throughout Alexandria contribute a portion of their proceeds throughout the day to the Walk to Fight Breast Cancer. All money raised through this event supports Alexandria's Breast Cancer Funds at Inova Alexandria Hospital Foundation. The 2012 Dine Out Shop Event will be held on October 15.

About the Walk

The Walk to Fight Breast Cancer was initiated in 1994 by former City Manager Vola Lawson and has developed a rich heritage among the community's business leaders and individuals. As one of Alexandria's most anticipated annual events, the Walk supports free mammograms and other diagnostic screening procedures for Alexandria women who are not adequately insured, who earn low/moderate income and could not otherwise obtain this necessary medical care. We are proud that since its inception, more than 7,000 women have received mammograms and other diagnostic procedures through the generous support of our sponsors, walkers and their pledges.

We want to thank all who sponsored and supported last year's Walk, in which nearly 1,000 people participated, and over $100,000 was raised to help provide Alexandria's women with the best medical care available.

Mammogram Information

The Alexandria Breast Cancer Walk Fund at Inova Alexandria Hospital provides free mammograms for women who:

  • live in the City of Alexandria
  • need a mammogram
  • do not have insurance or whose insurance does not cover screening mammograms.

Who needs a mammogram?

  • Women over 40 should have a mammogram every year.
  • If you have a family history of breast cancer or aren't sure, ask your health care provider.
  • Women or men with a suspicious lump should see their health care provider.

How do I get a free mammogram?

After obtaining a prescription for a mammogram, contact the Walk Coordinator at 703.746.3123 for more information on how to access the fund. Women without a health care provider should contact the Arlandria Health Center at 703.535.5568 to request an appointment for an exam.

Ultrasound Associates Women's Imaging Center also donates 20 mammograms annually to women who are uninsured or underinsured and live in the City of Alexandria. For more information on how to obtain access to these mammograms, please contact the Walk Coordinator at 703.746.3123 or TheWalk@alexandriava.gov.
