How do I obtain an official (certified) copy of my marriage license?

Come into the clerk's office or mail a written request. Information you need to provide is the name of the groom, maiden name of the bride, date of the marriage. The fee is $2.50 cash or money order for each copy. If mailed you must include a stamped, self-addressed return envelope.

What do I need to obtain a marriage license?

Both parties need to be at least 18 years of age. Both come together to the clerk's office at 520 King Street, between hours of 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A picture ID will be required. The fee is $30.00, cash only. The license is valid anywhere in Virginia for a period of 60 days. If you do not have a marriage ceremony within that time, the license expires. There is no marriage celebrant in the Clerk's Office. You should call the information line at (703) 746-4044 (option 1) to obtain the names of civil celebrants to contact for an appointment for the ceremony or click here.

How do I obtain an official (certified) copy of my divorce decree?

Come into the clerk's office or mail a written request. Information you need to provide is the names of both parties, date of the divorce. The fee is $5.00 cash or money order for each copy. If mailed you must include a stamped, self-addressed return envelope.

Do I need a lawyer to get a divorce?

A Virginia lawyer can best advise you as to the requirements to obtain a divorce and advise you of your rights in that regard. You may file a divorce without a lawyer. The clerk is not allowed to practice law, so he/she cannot review the papers you file, cannot provide you with the proper forms, cannot advise you of the proper time or place to file. You may find information and forms available in the law library or the public library. The Code of Virginia, available in the libraries, sets out the laws that apply to filing divorces. Contact Lawyer Referral (703) 548-1105 or Legal Aid (703) 684-5566 for legal advice.

How do I get a concealed handgun permit?

You must be over 21 years of age and apply in the City or County where you reside. Application forms and the Alexandria City Requirements can be obtained from the Clerk's Office or click here.

How do I sue someone for damages or non-payment of a debt?

If the amount sought is less than $15,000.00, you should contact the General District Court. If you are seeking more than $15,000.00, you may need to file in the Circuit Court. There are no forms available. You should consult an attorney. Contact Lawyer Referral (703) 548-1105 or Legal Aid (703) 684-5566 for legal advice.
