Caregiver ResourcesCaregiver Support

If you are caring for a loved one, there are resources available to help you provide care, gather information and support you as a caregiver.

Alexandria Adult Day Services Center

The Adult Day Services Center serves adults age 55 or older who need supervision during the day due to dementia, medical conditions or mental health needs.  The program is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., and transportation to the program is available.  Daily activities include a nutritious breakfast, lunch and snack; therapeutic recreation activities; medical monitoring and medication administration in a safe and secure environment.

The Center gives caregivers peace of mind knowing that their loved one is in a safe and caring environment and that their needs are being monitored and met by compassionate, professional staff.  The Center’s experienced staff can provide information and referral to caregivers about other community services.

Monthly Caregiver Support Group

This group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the Adult Day Services Center from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. Participants are full-time caregivers or family members or friends providing part-time caregiving. Participants share their experiences, provide support for each other and receive resources to assist them with care giving. For more information, contact Jennifer Sarisky at 703.746.6024.

Northern Virginia Ombudsman Program

Alexandria participates in the Northern Virginia Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, which is operated through the Fairfax County Office of Aging.  How can an Ombudsman help caregivers?  An Ombudsman can:

  • Advocate for improving the quality of life for persons receiving long-term care services
  • Resolve complaints against long-term care providers through counseling, negotiation and investigation
  • Provide information about long-term care providers to help consumers make an informed decision
  • Visit residents of long-term care facilities on a weekly basis through our volunteer program
