Teen Pregnancy Rate Improved in 2012

The Alexandria Health Department is pleased to announce that the City of Alexandria’s 2012 teen pregnancy rate has dropped 7.5 percent to 30.9 pregnancies per 1,000 10-19 year-old females. This marks the lowest overall teen pregnancy rate in Alexandria in more than 16 years and is a reflection of the hard work and collaboration of a number of City agencies and community partners.

The continued improvement in Alexandria’s teen pregnancy rate reflects an unwavering dedication to reduce teen pregnancy through evidence-based approaches and strong alliances between City agencies and community partners. The positive improvements seen over the past few years are influenced by the daily efforts of the Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy (ACAP), Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS), Teen Wellness Center (TWC) and mental health counselors, the Department of Community and Human Services, Healthy Families, Resource Mothers, Community Lodgings and Alexandria Neighborhood Health Services, Inc. In addition, steadfast support from Mayor William D. Euille, City Council and the ACPS School Board continue to be invaluable.

In 2012, reductions in teen pregnancy in Alexandria occurred among all age ranges and racial/ethnic groups; however, inequities still exist among different segments of the community.  Data from 2012 show that white teens had a rate of 23.5 pregnancies per 1,000 females; black teens had a rate of 30.7; while Hispanic teens had a rate of 52.5. Although reductions in teen pregnancy have occurred across the board, inequities still exist.

Alexandria’s overall teen pregnancy rate is still high compared to the state and neighboring jurisdictions.

As we celebrate the improvements in Alexandria’s teen pregnancy rates, we must acknowledge that the true measure of success will be sustained and continuous reductions in teen pregnancies and the elimination of health disparities.

To achieve this, we must maintain our collective dedication and commitment to protecting our youths’ futures by continuing to employ innovative and evidence-based programs. Alexandria Health Department looks forward to continuing this work with our partners.
