Healthy Vending Machines are Coming Soon

Starting this fall, healthy snacks and beverages provided by Vend Natural will be available throughout City departments! Vend Natural was selected by the City through an open, competitive process.

The new initiative recognizes the City’s simultaneous roles as a public health agency, large employer, children’s activity provider, and public facility operator, and establishes the City as a leader in modeling healthy choices for the entire Alexandria community. New machines will ensure that City employees and community members have access to healthy snacks and beverages, making the healthy choice the easy choice.

What to expect from new machines:

Snacks and beverages will follow USDA’s “Smart Snacks in Schools”, nutrition standards, which include at least 50% whole grain and up to 200 calories, 35% fat, 35% sugar, and 200mg salt.

  • Items will include fresh fruits and vegetables, yogurts, whole grain cookies, bars, chips, and crackers, and low calorie beverages.
  • Machines will accept credit cards, operate with greater energy efficiency, offer improved customer service, and have digital screens that display nutritional information before you make a purchase!

If you have any questions, please contact Rena Needle, Community Coordinator at the Alexandria Health Department at rena.needle@vdh.virginia.gov or 703.746.4934.
