Gadsby's Tavern Museum Resources for Educators

Gadsby’s Tavern Museum supports educators in classrooms, homes, and within organizations. Our on-site programs cover the range, from special tours and hands-on activities to lectures and living history opportunities, and can be tailored to meet the needs of your specific group.

Education Programs

A variety of educational programs are offered throughout the week and year. Many programs require advance registration and some are scheduled only a few times a year, so be sure to contact the Curator of Education to make your reservations today!

School Programs. Gadsby’s Tavern Museum offers a variety of school tour programs tailored to match the curricula of students in the classroom. Educators may choose from one of our pre-packaged programs for grades K through 6 or work with the museum educator to create their own tour experience.

Adult Programs. Group tours are offered by reservation at the special rate of $4; a special costumed guide is $5 per person, or a special evening lantern tour at $6. In order to receive the group rate, tours must include 8 or more people and be scheduled at least two weeks in advance of the tour date. For group packages, contact the Curator of Education. There are also a variety of lectures and living history programs of interest for adults. Consult the Calendar of Events for upcoming programs.

Homeschool Programs. Homeschool families and groups are welcome to schedule a school tour. We also offer internship and volunteer opportunities for students 14 and older. Submit an application and return it to the museum care of the Curator of Education.

Camp and Daycare Programs. Daycares and camps can explore the museum and discover what it was like to travel over 200 years ago in Alexandria. Choose from one of our three programs specially designed for camp and daycare groups ages 4 and up. Cost for the approximately one-hour programs is $5 per child (minimum of $30) with up to 5 adults admitted free. History camps sponsored by local museum and historic societies receive a discount. Contact the Curator of Education to schedule your program. Tour times available Tuesday through Friday in the mornings or afternoons. Take home a souvenir goody bag for an additional $1.25 per bag. Includes a museum pencil, sticker, and postcard. Must be pre-ordered when you schedule your program.

Scout Programs. Scouting groups interested in experiencing history first-hand will enjoy the programs at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum. Combine a 30-minute tour of the Museum with a visit to Old Town Alexandria. Reservations are required for many of our special events; tickets can be purchased online. Groups who can’t make it to the tavern can rent one of our educational kits to bring history to life at their meetings.

Girl Scouts can spend the night at the Tavern and experience life as an 18th century traveler!  Girls will be working on their It’s Your World—Change It! journey as they band together to save the tavern and “meet” historic heroines along the way.  Evening includes 18th century dancing and the Tale of the Female Stranger, as well as an evening snack and light breakfast.  Must be 4th grade or older to attend; no tag-alongs.  We can accommodate male chaperones.  Cost is $20 per adult and $30 per girl and overnights begin at 7 p.m. select Friday evenings and end at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning.  Groups must meet Safety Wise requirements of the Girl Scouts and take care of their own permission slips.  Activity patch available for purchase at the event.  Reservations available online

Special Needs. Groups with special needs can call in advance to arrange a program and work directly with the Curator of Education to ensure your Museum experience fits the needs of all in your group. The tavern buildings are multi-level and do not have elevators; however, if notified when scheduling the program, adjustments can be made to include all to the best of our ability. Sign language and foreign language interpreters may also be available if requested at least two weeks in advance when making your reservation.

Re-Enactors in your Classroom

Gadsby’s Tavern Museum works closely with the Living History Foundation, a volunteer organization. While Gadsby’s Tavern Museum cannot book a re-enactor for your group nor provide costumed staff for events or classroom visits, we may be able to provide additional references. If you would like to bring your class to scheduled events that feature re-enactors, please check our calendar.

Educational Outreach Kits

Want to bring objects, primary source documents, and images into your classroom? Then look no further than the Museum's Outreach Kits. The Tavern in a Trunk is designed to bring all of this and more directly to the students. The Museum also offers Playing the Past for the classroom or Scout use which walks your group through recreating an 18th century ball.
