Biking & Walking
We are a city of cyclists! More people than ever are using their bicycles for errands and riding on the popular Mount Vernon and Holmes Run trails. The City is a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community.

New Capital Bikeshare stations will be added in the Del Ray, Carlyle, and Old Town areas in 2013. Station locations will be selected from locations suggested by the public, and preferences shown on the interactive crowdsourcing map.

The City of Alexandria has over 30 lane miles of bicycle facilities in design for 2013 which will double the number of existing on street bicycle lanes.

On April 4th, the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES) removed one parking space at the foot of King Street and installed Old Town’s first public bicycle parking corral. Ten new bike parking spaces were installed in front of Mai Thai Restaurant and Starbucks next to two existing parking spaces.
This summer, the City will be connecting the existing bicycle lanes on Commonwealth Avenue north of Mount Vernon Avenue. Currently, the lanes end and are shared through the intersection and for a few blocks north of Mount Vernon Avenue.
