Landmark Mall Redevelopment
Earlier this week, staff from Planning & Zoning, Transportation & Environmental Services, Alexandria Economic Development Partnership and the City Manager’s Office met with representatives of the Howard Hughes Corporation (HHC). The corporation owns the Landmark Mall stores (with the exception of Macy’s and Sears) and most of the mall’s parking structure. HHC also owns approximately one-third of the entire property. They discussed the structure of the future Landmark Mall redevelopment planning processes to determine the redevelopment of this 52-acre site. HHC has hired a full team of consultants, and the City discussed whether HHC could pay for the City staff resources and traffic study that will be needed during the estimated 18-month site planning and rezoning process. Future meetings are planned that will result in a proposed redevelopment planning timetable, and proposed community engagement process. City staff would like to utilize the structure of the previous Landmark
Van Dorn Advisory Committee as the core community group.
King/Beauregard Intersection Improvements
Over the past several months, Transportation & Environmental Services has been proceeding with the right-of-way acquisition phase of the King/Beauregard Streets Intersection Improvements project. Agreement has been reached with several of the property owners to purchase the necessary right-of-way and easements; negotiations continue with the remaining property owners. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2013.
