Proposed Park on the Wythe Street Post Office Block

This fall, the City will be moving forward with planning for a park on the Wythe Street Post Office block, originally proposed in the approved Braddock Small Area Plan.  Staff proposes to begin planning for the portion of the park on the City-owned property located at 600 North Henry Street, either as Phase I of the final park design or as a temporary installation. Planning will be a coordinated effort, working with the Braddock Implementation Advisory Group, the Parks and Recreation Commission, and the community.

Update - Edsall Road Construction

Milling and paving on Edsall Road will begin the week of September 10, and is expected to be finished by Spring 2013.  This work will take place Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.  There may be significant local traffic impacts and motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes.  Variable message signs will be posted to alert drivers and provide detour information.

Community Lodgings, Inc. Begins Renovation Project Funded By City Loan

On August 28, Community Lodgings, Inc. (CLI) celebrated the kick-off of a major renovation of its property at 612 Notabene Drive. The City of Alexandria provided a $300,000 loan to CLI to help pay for this renovation. There has been some confusion in the community that this is an expansion project. However, all work is being done within the existing four walls of the current CLI building. CLI is working with Pulte Homes and HomeAid Northern Virginia to complete the renovations, which include new windows and doors, HVAC system replacement, an electrical and plumbing upgrade, a new roof, bathroom and kitchen upgrades (including new appliances, fixtures, and cabinets), common area updates and new flooring.  The total renovation costs equal about $875,000. HomeAid builds and renovates homeless shelters, transitional houses, food banks, medical clinics, counseling centers, and other facilities that help homeless people gain stability and a roof over their heads. CLI is a local non-profit organization, established in 1987, to preserve affordable housing, provide transitional housing for the homeless, and help families become self-sufficient through counseling and supportive services programs.

Covanta Donates Electric Car for City Use

The City of Alexandria's Department of Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES) is partnering with Covanta Energy to promote the environmental benefits of using waste as fuel for the generation of electricity. Covanta operates the Energy from Waste facility located at 5301 Eisenhower Avenue in Alexandria, which generates electricity by converting waste into fuel, rather than burying it in a landfill. The facility produces enough electricity to power over 25,000 homes each year. Covanta recently donated a Nissan Leaf to the City's Recycling Office for the next three years. This fully electric car runs solely on a rechargeable battery, and gets approximately 106 miles per gallon. The City's Recycling Team will use this car to perform route inspections and work with businesses as they promote recycling. Due to the City's density, electric cars with zero emissions and limited range are ideal.
