Plan Unveiled for "Next Generation of Metro"

On January 24, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) released a draft strategic plan, "Momentum," which defines the next generation of Metro. The agency is simultaneously beginning to plan for expansion to ensure the long-term competitiveness of the National Capital Region, and to keep pace with the demand from expected population growth. Several mid- and long-term priorities were identified in the plan, including: 1) maximizing the efficiency and capacity of the current network; 2) developing next-generation communications infrastructure to improve the customer experience; 3) completing the Metro bus priority corridor network; building new pedestrian connections between stations; 4) acquiring additional 8-car railcars to increase capacity; and 5) adding capital infrastructure to offer more route flexibility, such as a new connection between the Orange and Blue lines southeast of Rosslyn.
