DASH Comprehensive Operations Analysis Update

The DASH Comprehensive Operations Analysis (COA), a joint project of the City and the Alexandria Transit Company, recently launched an online survey.  The COA will evaluate the current DASH network, identifying service improvements that will improve the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of the DASH system.  Earlier this spring, the project team conducted stakeholder interviews and performed boarding and alighting counts, random telephone surveys, and on-board rider surveys to gather feedback that will be used to develop recommendations for the system.  This summer, a brief survey is available online for the public to offer additional input on current and future DASH service.  In the fall, the project team will hold two public meetings to share preliminary findings and to solicit additional input.

The City’s Office of Housing is pleased to announce that Housing Counseling Services (HCS) will begin holding weekly Foreclosure Prevention Clinics starting July 16.  The clinics will be held at the Office of Housing, 421 King Street, Suite 200 in Alexandria.  The sessions will begin at noon and will offer both group and individual counseling sessions to assist homeowners who are experiencing financial difficulties.  These sessions are free to the public. Although the clinic will be open to all Northern Virginia residents, staff anticipates that the majority of participants will be Alexandria residents.  To confirm attendance, please call HCS at 202.667.7967.

Public Comment on Draft Combined Sewer System Permit

The City of Alexandria is encouraging residents to participate in a process that will help bring long-term improvements to Alexandria’s sewer system infrastructure, improve water quality, and meet new regulatory requirements.  In 2011, the City applied to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) for renewal of its Virginia Pollution Discharge Elimination Permit, which regulates the City’s Combined Sewer System (CSS).  Under the permit negotiated by the City with VDEQ, the City will update its Long Term Control Plan (LTCP) over the next three years, and implement additional projects to improve water quality in the Potomac River, Chesapeake Bay, and Hunting Creek.  VDEQ will open the draft permit for public comment from July 12 through August 12.  Residents are also encouraged to provide public comment on the draft permit and process used to develop the LTCP at the City’s Environmental Policy Commission public hearing on August 5 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at City Hall in Sister Cities room 1101, or e-mail comments to Lalit Sharma, Office of Environmental Quality Division Chief, at Lalit.Sharma@alexandriava.gov

Health Department Emergency Response Team Ensures Community Safety During June 28 Power Outages

On Friday, June 28, strong thunderstorms caused major power outages on the west end of the City, including the Health Department’s main office at 4480 King Street. This not only provided an opportunity to prove the generator works in an emergency, it also tested staff’s resolve to work tirelessly into the night, at the end of a long week, to ensure the safety of medical facilities and restaurants throughout Alexandria. Public health emergency management staff worked past 1 a.m. on Saturday morning and through late Saturday afternoon to partner with the Office of Emergency Management and Dominion Virginia Power to prioritize nursing homes that were without power. Friday night, one staff member visited a facility with EMS to perform a site assessment after their generator failed. Environmental Health specialists also worked around the clock both Friday and Saturday to contact more than 40 restaurants to determine their power status; they subsequently made on-site visits to 18 of those facilities to ensure they were not operating without power and to assist them in safely resuming operations when power was restored.
