AlexRenew Announces Rate Restructuring

In a vote last month, the Alexandria Renew Enterprises’ Board of Directors accepted staff’s recommendation to eliminate the $6.78 VAW account service charge and increase usage fees by 15 cents per thousand gallons used. There will be no change in the Residential Bay Protection charge, and customers using less than 45,000 gallons per quarter would see a reduction in their bill (the average customer uses 12,000 gallons per quarter). The change will begin October 1, 2013, with modest usage increases for three years. The restructuring is one of many changes happening at AlexRenew (formerly the Alexandria Sanitation Authority). Other changes include the building of a new Nutrient Management Facility and a new billing process.

Mt. Vernon Trail Periodically Closed for Maintenance

From Monday, August 19 to Friday, September 6, the Mt. Vernon Trail behind the Potomac River Generating Station (formerly the GenOn plant) will be closed periodically as NRG Energy performs trail maintenance. A flag person and signage will be visible at both ends of the trail for safety; trail users should proceed with caution during this period, and use the alternate trail in front of the plant that runs along Bashford Lane and E. Abingdon and meets the Mt. Vernon Trail north of the plant.

City Receives Community Homeownership Revitalization Program Funding

The City of Alexandria has been awarded an allocation of $900,000 from the Virginia Housing Development Authority’s Community Homeownership Revitalization Program (CHRP).  This resource will provide reduced rate mortgage financing for lower-income, first-time homebuyers participating in Rebuilding Together Alexandria’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP).  While rates will vary, the CHRP loan rates for a 30-year mortgage have been as low as 2%.  The funds are expected to serve a total of six households through June 30, 2014. To learn more about NSP, contact the Office of Housing at 703.746.4990. To register for a free homebuyer training class which is required for participation in NSP, contact Rebuilding Together Alexandria at 703.836.1021.
