City's CRS Repetitive Loss Area Analysis Progress Report Available

The City of Alexandria is a participant in the Community Rating System (CRS) program administered by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The CRS is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management activities that exceed those required by the NFIP. Communities are encouraged to meet three goals: 1) reduce flood damage to insurable property; 2) strengthen and support the insurance aspects of the NFIP, and 3) encourage a comprehensive approach to floodplain management. Meeting these goals entitles residents to discounted flood insurance premiums. City residents receive up to a 15% discount because of the City’s ongoing efforts. For the 1,749 total flood insurance policies in force, this discount results in up to $210,000 in savings to residents. As part of the CRS, Alexandria conducted a Repetitive Loss Area Analysis (RLAA) for areas that experience frequent damage from flooding events. The RLAA document was adopted by the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services in 2012. To continue receiving credit for the RLAA activity, the City must submit an annual public progress report. The 2013 report is now available online.

The City, in conjunction with contractor Virginia Paving, is scheduled to begin paving King Street from Callahan Drive to Janneys Lane in the next two weeks. It is estimated the project will be completed over the course of 15 nights, with work taking place from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. City staff will be on site for the duration of the project to work with the contractor and mitigate noise impacts. One lane of reversible traffic will remain open at all times.
