City of Alexandria Named 2008 Ambassador City
City, Northern Virginia Association of Realtors® Recognized for Partnership
On Homeownership, Foreclosure Prevention Programs

The U.S. Conference of Mayors and the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) have designated the City of Alexandria as one of six Ambassador Cities for 2008. The City and the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors® (NVAR) were chosen for their partnership in providing homeownership education for low- and moderate-income City residents and City and school workers, and for their foreclosure prevention education initiative.

NAR and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, through the Council on the New American City, launched the Ambassador for Cities program in 2003 to encourage cities and local Realtor® associations to form partnerships to promote affordable housing and homeownership in their communities. Other cities recognized were Allentown, Pennsylvania, Asheville, North Carolina, Bowling Green, Kentucky, Irvine, California, and Richmond, Virginia.

As one of the six Ambassador Cities, Alexandria will hold public events throughout 2008 that will highlight the success of its partnership with NVAR. In addition, NVAR will receive a $5,000 grant to help promote the initiative.

Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille, who has a long history of support for the City’s affordable homeownership efforts, participated in each of the City’s homeownership education and foreclosure prevention events. “Helping lower-income residents and workers to purchase and maintain their first home in the City demonstrates that Alexandria is truly a caring community,” said Mayor Euille. “These important initiatives serve to help residents achieve an important step in attaining economic self-sufficiency, to help our City maintain its diversity, and to stabilize our communities against the current wave of foreclosures.”
