Reference

This page includes links to reference documents for those interested in studying the development of planning policies in the City of Alexandria and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region over time. Most documents here and that will be added to this page as time permits date from the 1960s to the present, and were collected by City Demographer Ralph Rosenbaum during his employment with the City. Policy documents and studies tend to be discarded to make room when the superseding document is published, and some of the documents here may no longer exist in any other form.

Master Plans

1962. Alexandria Land Use and Transportation Plan. A CBD Map, Land Use Plan Map and Major Thoroughfare Plan Map for this plan are available for review at the Department of Planning and Zoning. 

1963. Community Facilities Master Plan. Enitited "To Serve 165,000," this plan was prepared as a followup to the adoption of the land use plan and transportation plan in 1962, and a comprehensive rezoning in 1963.

1974. Consolidated Master Plan. This plan was a comprehensive update of the 1962 and 1963 planning documents.
