Parking Standards for New Development Study
PARKING STUDY COMMENCES
At the direction of City Council, the City of Alexandria has commenced a study to evaluate existing parking standards for development projects and establish updated parking standards for new development projects. The purpose of the study is to review the City’s parking standards, which have not had a comprehensive review since 1992, and provide parking standards that reflect existing parking demand and market trends. Non-auto travel (including transit use, cycling and walking) has steadily increased since the City’s current standards were set and there are indications that per household car ownership is declining in areas with better access to transit. This project will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will examine and provide updated standards for new multi-family residential developments. Phase 2 of the study will evaluate the parking standards for new retail, commercial, and office development.
City of Alexandria Host a Speakers Event
On Monday, March 31 at 7pm (Lyceum, 201 S. Washington Street, Alexandria, VA), the City will host an expert panel event, “Why Right-Sized Parking Matters: National and Regional Best Practices, Local Level Implementation, Impacts & Community Benefits”. Expert speakers representing national and regional organizations and businesses will discuss the micro and macroeconomic impacts of parking and community benefits for right-sized parking. Although Phase I of the City's parking study is focused on solely on new residential development projects, this event will cover parking from a comprehensive perspective. After the speakers share their perspectives, members of the public will be invited to participate in the discussion. Please attend!
The City of Alexandria is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended. To request a reasonable accommodation, email Graciela Moreno at Graciela.Moreno@alexandriava.gov or call 703.746.4666 (Virginia Relay 711)

On January 14, 2014, City Council established the Parking Standards for New Development Projects Task Force (Task Force) to work with City staff in reviewing existing parking standards and updating standards for new development projects. The nine-member Task Force will provide input on revisions to the City’s parking requirements for new development projects. Members of the Task Force will be expected to attend the public meetings associated with the effort, including a two-part speaker series on parking issues, staff-led working meetings of the Task Force, and work sessions and public hearings of the Planning Commission and City Council. Phase 1 of this two phase project is focused on new residential development parking standards and is expected to end in January 2015. Phase 2 of the study will evaluate the parking standards for new retail, commercial, and office development.
The City issued a Call for Nominations on February 3 and accepted applications until February 14 to fill four slots:
