City Hosts 36th Annual Memorial Day Jazz Festival

The City of Alexandria will host the 36th Annual Memorial Day Jazz Festival on Monday, May 27, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Waterfront Park, 1A Prince St. In case of inclement weather, the festival will be relocated to the Lee Center’s Kauffman Auditorium, 1108 Jefferson St. Admission is free.

 

Closing of Chinquapin Park Recreation Center Delayed to June 17
The Chinquapin Park Recreation Center will close for day-to-day operations on Monday, June 17 to facilitate facility improvements. Staff continues to develop alternatives in providing programs and activities to minimize inconvenience to the community. For additional information, contact David A. Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission Seeks Nominations for the 2013 CIVIC Awards

The Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission is seeking nominations for the 2013 CIVIC Awards. The annual awards program recognizes the unsung volunteer efforts of Alexandrians who are involved in their communities and who have provided a valuable service to Alexandria in meeting recreation, park, or cultural needs. Nominations must be received by Thursday, June 13.

Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities to Gather Public Input on Draft Plans for the City’s Six Large Parks

Over the past nine months, over 535 Alexandria residents provided feedback on the City’s large parks, including Four Mile Run Park, Simpson Park, Chinquapin Park, Holmes Run Park System, Hensley Park, and Brenman/Boothe Parks. Park Planning staff has used the feedback develop draft plans for each Park. The draft plans will be available for viewing and comment on the City website in Mid-May. There will also be opportunities for comment and discussion at scheduled workshops. 
 

Nonprofit Arts & Culture Organizations Generate $70.7 Million in Economic Impact for City of Alexandria

The City of Alexandria Office of the Arts and the Alexandria Convention & Visitors Association announced a $70.7 million in economic impact for the arts at an event on March 5, 2013. During the program, the city was recognized as one of 44 Top ArtPlaces in the U.S.

City of Alexandria Purchases Polk Avenue Property for Use as Open Space

On December 11, 2012 City Council authorized City Manager Rashad M. Young to contract for the acquisition of the property at 5325 Polk Ave. for $1.9 million. The City’s purchase of this 2.34 acre property used the $1.5 million provided by the Department of Defense to mitigate loss of open space in the West End, as well as $0.4 million in City Open Space funds.

Ad Hoc Fort Ward Park and Museum Area Stakeholder Advisory Group

The Advisory Group was re-established by City Council resolution in June 2011. The group will provide City staff recommendations on the appropriate balance of park uses, as well as implanting education and outreach opportunities and implantation of recommendations made in the 2011 Fort Ward Park and Museum Area Stakeholder Advisory Group report
