Playground Renovations

The Department’s Park and Playground Renovation Program replaces deteriorating play equipment and provides small scale enhancements in playgrounds and parks throughout the City.  The program ensures that the City’s 35 play areas are scheduled to comply with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards for Public Playgrounds.  Many playgrounds have outdated equipment that no longer comply with current safety standards.  Renovations include conversion from an engineered mulch surfacing to a more durable and resilient rubberized surfacing made from recycled rubber.

Completed Renovations

  • Mount Jefferson Park, 301 Hume Ave.- Completed October 2012
  • James Mulligan Park, 3000 S. 28th St.- Completed October 2010
  • Landover Park, 3315 Landover St.- Completed September 2010
  • Stevenson Park,  300 Stultz Rd.- Completed December 2010
  • Tarleton Park, Holmes Run/Wheeler Ave.- Completed December 2010

Future Renovations

Renovations are determined according to play equipment conditions and renovation history.  Renovations typically occur every 15-20 years, with minor upgrades and repairs as needed.  The renovation schedule is submitted each year for Capital Funding approval.  The most recent schedule is from the FY2013 Approved Capital Budget and is subject to change.
