On October 13, 2009 the City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities achieved reaccreditation by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA).  The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities is one of only eighty-eight park and recreation agencies in the country to currently hold national accreditation. More information….

Ad Hoc Fort Ward Park and Museum Area Stakeholder Advisory Group Meeting (released November 23, 2009)
The City of Alexandria's Ad Hoc Fort Ward Park and Museum Area Stakeholder Advisory Group will hold its first meeting at the Fort Ward Museum, 4301 W. Braddock Rd. at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 8. Winter 2010 Recreation Program Guide Available Week of December 7 (released November 17, 2009)
Subscribers to the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will receive the Winter 2010 Recreation Program Guide by mail during the week of December 7 and the guide will be posted online Monday, December 7. As part of the City of Alexandria’s Eco-City Initiative, the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities has reduced the number of printed program guides and no longer automatically mails them to all households. City of Alexandria Searches for Poet Laureate (released November 16, 2009)
The City of Alexandria Office of the Arts is issuing a call for applications to serve as the City’s Poet Laureate.  The Poet Laureate fosters an appreciation of poetry as an art form, encourages creative writing and reading, and promotes literacy through poetry. City of Alexandria Opens Soft Playroom at Chinquapin (released October 24, 2009)
The City of Alexandria will celebrate the opening of the Alexandria Soft Playroom on Sunday, November 1 at the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center, 3210 King St. with a dedication ceremony by the Honorable Mayor and members of City Council at 2 p.m. The room is now open to the public daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at a nominal fee for individual play, and may be reserved for groups and parties. More information….

Third Annual City of Alexandria Film Festival Features Local and International Artists (released September 19, 2009)
The Festival kicks off on Thursday, September 24 with “Contrasts,” a black-and-white extravaganza at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, 105 N. Union St., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. “Contrasts” features music, refreshments, open artists’ studios, and an array of “silent” films projected simultaneously throughout the Torpedo Factory Art Center. The Alexandria Commission for the Arts will conduct two grant workshops, one on Monday, September 14 and another on Wednesday, October 7 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Dr. Oswald D. Durant Center, 1605 Cameron St. The workshops will provide information about the Commission’s annual grant program, which provides funding to non-profit arts organizations for various arts programs, and instructions for the on-line grant application process. City to Hold Community Meeting on Alexandria Police Memorial (released July 17, 2009)
The City of Alexandria has scheduled a community meeting on the proposed Alexandria Police Memorial on Tuesday, July 28 at 7 p.m. at Bishop Ireton High School Cafeteria, 201 Cambridge Rd. The Alexandria Police Memorial will be an integral part of the new Alexandria Police Department Headquarters building scheduled to open in the fall of 2011 on Wheeler Avenue. The City of Alexandria is conducting a competition to select an artist and design and has formed a Selection Panel representing a cross-section of Police groups and artists/design professionals. More information....

Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities Announces New Fees for Fiscal Year 2010 (released June 25, 2009)
On May 12, City Council voted to increase fees in several City departments. The increases were made in response to the City’s current economic challenges, the need to meet Fiscal Year 2010 budget goals, and the increased cost of providing these services to residents and the public. Effective July 1, 2009, the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities (RPCA) will increase fees for non-programmatic fees by a maximum increase equal to the annual rate of inflation (CPIU), in addition to other programmatic fees. More information....

West Wing of Lee Center Closed
(released June 2, 2009)
A 2" water line in the roof top mechanical room at the Lee Center failed the morning of Saturday, May 30, causing severe water damage to several office areas in Recreation Services and Therapeutic Recreation, and Therapeutic Recreation program space, the Exhibit Hall and Kauffman Auditorium. As a result, the west wing of the Lee Center has been closed for cleanup work. The Lee Center serves as the administrative offices for the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, 1108 Jefferson St.

Recreation Services’ staff in the affected area has been relocated to other areas of the Lee Center. These include the Recreation Class and Camp Office, Senior Programs, Out of School Programs, Teen Programs, Youth & Adult Sports, and administrative support to the neighborhood recreation centers. The Therapeutic Recreation program has been temporarily relocated to the Durant Center, 1605 Cameron Street. Participants may continue to call existing phone numbers for program information.

Cleanup activities and the relocation of staff is expected to be a minimum of one to two weeks. For additional information, call 703.838.4343.

Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities FY 2010 Service Reductions (released May 30, 2009)
On Aril 27, City Council adopted a $530 million General Fund Operating Budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2010, a 2.2% decrease of $12 million from FY 2009 resulting in service reductions in several City departments. Alexandria Commission for the Arts Seeks Public Comment on a Mural to Be Hung in the Future Alexandria Soft Playroom (released May 8, 2009)
The Soft Playroom Group/Natural Exploreum is creating a temporary mural to be displayed in the future Soft Playroom at Chinquapin Park Recreation Center. The mural, which would be on loan to the City, is intended to enhance the room and provide a focal point upon entering. The City of Alexandria will observe the Days of Remembrance, Yom HaShoah, for the victims of the Holocaust at noon on Tuesday, April 21, in Market Square, 301 King St. The Alexandria City Council hosts the annual ceremony as part of the weeklong commemoration of the national Days of Remembrance, Sunday, April 19, through Sunday, April 26. This is the 22nd consecutive year that the City has held the Days of Remembrance ceremony. The event is free and open to the public. The City of Alexandria will host the 16th Annual Alexandria Earth Day and Arbor Day celebration at Ben Brenman Park, 4800 Brenman Park Dr., on Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year’s theme, "Take the Green Route,” will focus on showing citizens the benefits of leaving the car at home and walking, cycling or using public transportation. Annual City of Alexandria Cheerleading Competition (released March 25, 2009)
The public is invited to attend the City’s Annual Cheerleading Competition, scheduled for 11 am on Saturday, April 18 at T.C. Williams High School, 3330 King Street. The competition features preteen and teen cheerleading teams from the Charles Barrett, Charles Houston, Cora Kelly, Mount Vernon, Nannie J. Lee, Patrick Henry and William Ramsay Recreation Centers.  Tickets are available for purchase in advance, but there will be limited tickets available on the day of the event. City of Alexandria’s Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center Offers (released March 4, 2009)
The City of Alexandria’s Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center, located at 5750 Sanger Ave., will offer a weeklong nature day camp for youth ages 7 to 10. The camp is scheduled for April 6-10, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. Campers will participate in fun, nature-based learning activities, including woodland hikes, live animal exhibitions, journaling, story time, and nature games and crafts. Campers may be dropped off at 8:30 a.m. The camp fee is $275 for City residents ($300 for nonresidents) for the entire week. Registration is ongoing, and advance registration is required for all campers. Space is limited. More information....

The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will distribute the Spring & Summer 2009 Recreation Program Guide and post it online during the week of March 2. As part of the City of Alexandria’s Eco-City Initiative, the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities has reduced the number of printed program guides and will no longer automatically mail them to households. Alexandria Hosts Special Citywide Event: State of the City Address and Dedication of the New Charles Houston Recreation Center (released February 12, 2009)

City of Alexandria to Celebrate George Washington's 277th Birthday (released February 9, 2009)
On Monday, February 16, the City will celebrate the 277th birthday of its most famous citizen by holding the largest George Washington birthday parade in the United States. Many streets George Washington once walked will be shut down for the parade, which begins at 1 p.m. at the intersection of Wilkes Street and South St. Asaph Street. More information .....
