Make A Splash: City of Alexandria Announces Upcoming Aquatics Activities for All Ages

Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities offers aquatics activities for all ages, including Family Fun Night at Alexandria’s indoor pool, aquatics programs, and announcement of the upcoming 2014 outdoor pool season.

Dive into Spring at Family Fun Night on Friday, May 16, 7-10 p.m. at Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility, 3210 King St. Bring a pool float and the whole family for fun for all ages. Pool games include beach ball relays, water basketball and fun on the floating obstacle course. Celebrate National Water Safety Month with swimming skill assessments for youth, a lifeguard skill demonstration and learning proper lifejacket sizing. Sign-ups for summer camps and Wahoos Youth Swim Team will also be available on-site. Cost of admission is $4 per person. For more information, visit www.alexandriava.gov/c/8437.

Registration is now being accepted and space is still available for Summer aquatics classes for youth and adults, including swimming lessons, aqua aerobics, Lifeguard Training, Swim Team Fundamentals and 2013 Gold Division Champions Wahoos Youth Swim Team. Register online at www.alexandriava.gov/Recreation or in-person at the Registration and Reservations Office located at 1108 Jefferson Street. 2014 Outdoor Pool season operating schedule:

  • Old Town Pool, 1609 Cameron St.
    This complex includes an 8 lane, 25-yard pool with a diving well. A separate training pool is available for children up to 42 inches in height. Easily accessible for disabled, the training pool has a water depth range of 1-3 feet. For added convenience, a bathhouse and locker rooms are on-site.

    Open weekends Noon to 7 pm from May 24 through August 31
    Open weekdays Noon - 7 pm* from June 23 through August 29

    *The pool will close at 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, July 2 and July 9 to host the Wahoo Summer Swim Team competitions.

 

  • Warwick Pool, 3301 Landover St.
    The site includes a 25-yard pool with diving well and a separate wading pool for children up to 42 inches in height. A bathhouse is available. Picnic areas are located inside the pool complex as well as next-door, where a modern playground featuring a tot playground is also available. The complex provides natural privacy as it is surrounded by beautiful trees and shrubberies.

    Open weekends 11 am to 6 pm from May 24 through August 31
    Open weekdays Noon - 7 pm from June 23 through August 15

 

  • Memorial Pool, 901 Wythe St.
    Designed for parents to accompany their children, this pool features a water depth of 0-5 feet. Due to its size, access is limited to Alexandria residents ages 13 and younger and their parents and its maximum capacity is 45.

    Open weekdays Noon - 7 pm from June 23 through August 29
