Support Services

Support Services supports the Detention Center in several ways. Under the command of Captain Douglas Schuler, Support Services is responsible for maintaining the Detention Center's physical plant and for meeting all required fire safety and sanitation requirements. Support Services also supervises the preparation and delivery of all staff and inmate meals. This is accomplished through the work efforts of Detention Center inmates, who perform the actual cleaning and meal preparation, supervised closely by the Division's Facility Services staff and for food service, by the facility's contract food service provider.

Support Services also provides for the inmate records function. Records staff maintain hard copy files of each inmate housed in the Detention Center containing the inmates' legal status information, pending release dates, detainers from other jurisdictions, and with the exception of Classification, Medical and Mental Health status, other information related to each inmate's custody. The inmate records function is vital, for all inmate release dates are maintained in the Section, ensuring that individuals are appropriately released after serving their term of incarceration. Inmate Records is also responsible for making notifications to victims of the pending release of inmates housed in the Detention Center who were adjudicated in the Alexandria courts. This important service helps to protect the safety of victims every day. In 2012, Records staff processed 49,779 inmate records and files.

Through its efforts, Support Services adds value to the City through the work of the Inmate Work Detail. The Work Detail performs community works projects throughout the City for government agencies and non-profit organizations. Projects completed by the Work Detail include mulching and tree planting; mowing; trash removal in public thoroughfares, community parks, and public areas; painting; and completion of other beautification projects seen in Old Town and neighborhoods throughout the City. More recently, the Work Crew assisted the Alexandria Volunteer Bureau in the agency's move to its new building, earning commendations and compliments for their efforts. In FY 2012, the Work Detail performed 5,475 hours of service and saved the City approximately $150,000 in labor costs.Work Crews
