Alexandria Sheriff’s Office training staff has been busy implementing patrol training to strengthen and enhance Deputies’ patrol skills. Patrol training is provided biennially to ensure that Alexandria Deputy Sheriffs remain well equipped to manage incidents that require a law enforcement response.
Alexandria Deputy Sheriffs receive full law enforcement training and credentialing during their initial six month training academy. Once certified and a working Deputy Sheriff, they receive regular and state mandated training that keeps them abreast with current laws and practices.
The patrol training is an additional step required by Sheriff Dana Lawhorne to keep Deputy Sheriffs up to date and well trained. The patrol training classes are another way the Sheriff’s Office brings excellence to Alexandria!

After months of preparation, the Sheriff's Office honored Deputy William G. Truesdale, a fallen hero who gave up his life in the line of duty, and
dedicated a monument to him and to staff who in the future may join in his sacrifice. The dedication and naming ceremony on May 5 was held at the Alexandria Public Safety Center among 200 supporters, colleagues and Sheriff's Office retirees. The program featured speakers that included Alexandria Mayor William Euille, Sheriff Dana Lawhorne, Sheriff's Office retiree Robert McCray-Brown and from the Truesdale family, Mrs. Zita Noyes, widow of the late Deputy Truesdale, and Laurie Truesdale, his oldest child. The ceremony was especially poignant to the Truesdale family, for Kevin, Truesdale's youngest son, was sworn in as an Alexandria Deputy Sheriff. Kevin Truesdale was six months old at the time of his father's death.
The event also officially named the Alexandria Detention Center. As part of the ceremony, four Alexandria Deputy Sheriffs took their places and in a coordinated effort, revealed the new name of the building as the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center.
The spearhead for the May 5 event was Chief Deputy Lenny George, whose leadership brought the special events from conception to reality. Thanks also go to the City's General Services Department, whose staff coordinated with Sheriff's Office staff to beautify the grounds and prepare the physical plant for the ceremonies.
The honor of Deputy Truesdale was remarked upon later by Craig Floyd, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments ceremony honoring fallen Corrections officers on May 7, 2011. Please click here to read his remarks.
The tribute, 30 years in the making, truly honored a fallen hero and brought a Truesdale back to the Alexandria Sheriff's Office. Well done!
