The City of Alexandria owns and maintains a total of 28 Highway bridges, Culvert Structures and pedestrian bridges. The average age of these structures is 22+ years. Of the 28, eighteen are reportable to state and are on a biannual inspection program.
The federally mandated biannual inspections are conducted on regular basis and results transmitted to Virginia Department of Transportation. The inspection results are also used to identify maintenance items and scheduling repairs.
Smaller repairs and maintenance is carried out by City's operations and maintenance staff and larger repairs are contracted out.
