The City of Alexandria maintains and manages more than 560 lane miles of streets annually. In fiscal year 2016 City Council increased the City's paving budget to $5,600,000, a 25% increase over FY 2015. Additionally, the City participates in the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) State Revenue Sharing Program as well as leverages grant opportunities as they become available. On July 17, VDOT announced that the City will be awarded an additional $940,000 through the FY 2016 VDOT Primary Extensions Grant. This money will be used to pave sections of Duke St. as well as sections of North and South Van Dorn St. and will allow for additional paving and related sidewalk improvements to be completed this fiscal year. City staff uses an objective pavement management system to identify the condition of roads in the City, with the goal of paving the worst streets first. This year's paving program will begin in mid-July and through early fall, starting again in the spring of 2016. For detailed information about locations of paving projects and schedules visit:
