Metrorail Station Closure Updates and Information

Metro's closure of the six Blue and Yellow Line Metrorail stations south of the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Station is underway, and continues through September 8. Since the closure began, commuters have taken advantage of shuttle services provided by Metro and DASH, and are using alternative forms of transit. As the closure continues through the summer, residents, commuters and visitors are encouraged to use the available tools, including trip planning resources, real-time traffic cameras, Virginia road alerts and more, to guide their travel.

June 11 Primary Election

The Democratic Primary Election in Alexandria is June 11. All voters may choose a nominee for Clerk of Circuit Court. Voters in the Hermitage, John Adams, William Ramsay, and Southport precincts may choose a nominee for the Senate of Virginia from the 35th District. Voters in Virginia do not register by party, so any person registered to vote in Alexandria may vote in this upcoming election. There will be no Republican Primary Election this June. Instead, the Republican Party will hold a party canvass (meeting) to nominate its candidates for the November election.

Join the Conversation: Top 10 Local Health Issues

Following a yearlong evaluation process, the Alexandria Health Department invites community members to participate in a panel discussion and Q&A about Alexandria's most pressing health issues. Join the conversation, "Building a Healthier Alexandria Together," on Wednesday, June 26, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Beth El Hebrew Congregation (3830 Seminary Road). Dinner will be provided. Register in advance to select your meal preference and to enter a raffle for a $25 gift card. Interpreters provided in Spanish, Arabic, Amharic, and American Sign Language.

Portside in Old Town Summer Festival

Kick off summer with a day of live music featuring an array of creative collaborations and genres, from Ethiopian jazz to Brazilian and Latin folk, at the Portside in Old Town Summer Festival on Saturday, June 22, from 2 to 8 p.m., in Waterfront Park (1 King St.). The summer festival builds upon the success of the fall 2018 Portside in Old Town Festival and highlights the global cultural influences that stem from Alexandria's history as a port city, which continue today. Make a toast to summer at the waterfront beer garden, savor bites from local restaurants, and enjoy fun for the whole family, including hands-on arts and history activities.

SummerQuest is Back

Turn reading into an interactive experience this summer with the Alexandria Library's SummerQuest programs. Participants are incentivized to read by earning points for the minutes they log reading over the summer, through September 8. Points can also be collected through numerous other activities. These points can then be used to collect a free book. SummerQuest is open to all children through grade 12.

The City encourages residents to learn how to save lives during National CPR and AED Awareness Week, June 1-7. If performed within the first few minutes of cardiac arrest, CPR can double or triple a person's chance of survival. Watch this hands-only CPR demonstration to learn how you can help save a life.
