Virginia Tech Announces Alexandria Location for New Innovation Campus


The North Potomac Yard area of Alexandria will be the site of the new Virginia Tech Innovation Campus as part of a new 65-acre mixed-use district planned development in National Landing. Virginia Tech partner, Lionstone Investments, and real estate investment trust JBG SMITH, will build the new 1 million-square-foot graduate campus steps away from the future Potomac Yard Metrorail Station.

City of Alexandria Seeks Input on Vision for City Hall

The City would like community input on the future of its flagship facility through a City Hall Visioning Study. City Hall is the center of civic activity for Alexandrians and will remain the seat of City government. The community can provide input online through July 12, that will inform the development of renovation draft approaches. Those draft approaches will then be available for public comment at a City Hall Visioning community meeting, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in City Hall, Sister Cities Conference Room 1101 (301 King St.).

Alexandria Fire Chief Robert C. Dubé to Retire

Alexandria Fire Chief Robert C. Dubé has announced that he will retire, effective July 3. City Manager Mark B. Jinks has appointed Assistant Fire Chief of Administration Corey A. Smedley as acting fire chief. Dubé, a 40-year veteran of the fire service, joined the City in 2014. Smedley joined the City in 2015 and was promoted to Assistant Fire Chief of Administration in January 2019.

Alexandria Provides Guidelines on Small Cell Antennas

The City has seen an increase in applications to deploy "small cell" wireless equipment to provide 5G, enhanced 4G, and other modern communications technologies. With limited local authority to regulate this equipment, the City published interim design guidelines to comply with federal and state mandates. The guidelines address small cell attachments on existing structures, replacement of structures, guidance for new standalone structures, and pole height in City rights-of-way. Staff have been engaging in public outreach to civic groups, City Council and boards, wireless telecommunication carriers, and other stakeholders.

City Seeks Feedback on Metrorail Closures

The City of Alexandria is seeking feedback on alternative transportation methods during Metro's closure of all four Metrorail stations in Alexandria for safety repairs as part of its Platform Improvement Project. Customers who have used alternative transportation methods to replace Metrorail, or have avoided traffic caused by station closures, are encouraged to give feedback to the City online.
