City Council Approves Environmental Action Plan 2040 

On July 9, City Council voted unanimously to adopt the Environmental Action Plan 2040, an update to Eco-City Alexandria's comprehensive roadmap for creating a thriving, sustainable community. Key goals and actions in the plan update and policy include reducing community greenhouse gas emissions by 80 to 100% by 2050, aiming that all new City and public school building projects starting in 2020 achieve net-zero energy use, and retrofitting 95% of conventional street lights by 2021 with energy-efficient LED lighting.

Air Quality Action Days Program Reminder

Did you know that each summer the City runs an Air Quality Action Days program? Because concentrations of certain air pollutants, including smog, are higher during the summer months, the City works to increase awareness among its employees and the public regarding the health impacts of air quality during the warmest days.

Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, and the City encourages residents to learn about the challenges minorities face when seeking mental health treatment. Mental health conditions do not discriminate based on race, color, gender or identity. However, culture, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation can make access to mental health treatment much more difficult. Teen Law Enforcement Academy Enrollment Open

Residents between 14 and 18 years old who are considering a career in law enforcement are encouraged to enroll in the Alexandria Police Department's Teen Law Enforcement Academy. This free class will be held August 5-9, and is a behind-the-scenes opportunity to learn more about law enforcement. Police Department officers and staff will share their knowledge and experience through presentations, demonstrations, displays and hands-on activities. Applicants must have a clean criminal history. This program is free of charge.

Alexandria Library Celebrates Two Major Milestones

Alexandria Library has a rich history that spans two centuries! In 2019, the Library is celebrating its 225th year as an entity as well as the 80th anniversary of the historic 1939 Library Sit-In. Throughout the year, all locations will provide programs and events to celebrate both anniversaries.

Enrollment is open for the City Academy programs, which are designed to inform, educate and engage participants in local government.
