Community Workshop on Health Improvement Plan

The City invites the public to a community health workshop on Saturday, October 5, from 9 a.m. to noon at the T.C. Williams High School Minnie Howard Campus (3801 W. Braddock Road). Join the Alexandria Health Department and the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria to prioritize results from the recent Community Health Assessment  and start to create a five-year Community Health Improvement Plan.

City to Host Innovation Forum on Alexandria Mobility Plan

The City will host an Innovation Forum for the Alexandria Mobility Plan on Monday, October 7, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, in the Clara Barton Auditorium (600 Dulany St.). All are welcome to attend this unique event featuring local and national experts speaking about the intersection of technology and transportation. The panel discussion will provide an opportunity to ask questions and provide input on the Alexandria Mobility Plan.

Race and Social Justice Equity Initiative Policy Update

On September 24, City staff briefed City Council about progress on the City's race and social justice equity initiative. The presentation included reports from the Department of Community and Human Services, the Police Department, the Court Services Unit, and the Office of Human Rights. Their efforts included training, data and policy reviews of programs, engagement of diverse communities, and community advisory groups. The focus on equity is taking place across the Alexandria community with collaborative efforts from the Alexandria City Public Schools, ACT for Alexandria, and Parent Leadership and Training Institute alumni. A critical next step will be the hiring of a Race and Social Justice Equity Officer and expansion of the initiative to other City departments.

City Council Adopts Improvements on Seminary Road

On September 14, City Council approved changes to the portion of Seminary Road between N. Quaker Lane and N. Howard Street. The changes will take the road from four travel lanes to two travel lanes, a center turn lane, and buffered bike lanes. Additional pedestrian improvements, including crosswalks, islands and a temporary sidewalk will also be added. Seminary Road was identified in the City's Transportation Master Plan for potential improvements to ensure safety, mobility and accessibility for all roadway users. The road was also pinpointed for safety improvements during the City's Vision Zero Action Plan process. The approved changes will be implemented through the City's repaving program later this fall.

City Council Votes to Prohibit Firearms on City Property if State Legislature Acts

On September 14, 2019, City Council unanimously passed an ordinance to prohibit firearms on City property if the Virginia General Assembly provides this authority. The ordinance would prohibit the possession, carrying, or transportation of firearms in buildings owned, leased or operated by the City; and parks, recreational or community facilities owned by the City. The ordinance was passed in anticipation of possible action by the General Assembly to grant localities the authority to adopt and enforce such laws, which the City does not currently have.

Bullying Prevention Month

The City of Alexandria wishes to remind the public that October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. This is a time to raise awareness, share resources and encourage communities to take a stand against bullying. Residents that are victims of bullying or know someone who is being bullied can download the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) app to report bullying anonymously, or call Alexandria Safe Place at 703.746.5400.
