Willie F. Bailey Sr. has been an active firefighter for 26 years, and currently serves as the Battalion Chief of Community Public Affairs & Outreach for the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. He also served in the United States Army, retiring with 21 years of service.
As a member of City Council, Willie serves on the following local boards and commissions: Local Emergency Planning Committee, INOVA Alexandria Hospital Task Force, Eisenhower Partnership Board of Directors, Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Air Quality Committee, Alexandria Economic Opportunities Commission, and Alexandria Works! Coalition, Library Board, Northern Virginia Regional Commission, Children, Youth and Families Collaborative Commission, Community Policy and Management Team.
In 1998, he founded Firefighters and Friends to the Rescue, a non-profit organization that supplies thousands of children in Northern Virginia every year with backpacks, school supplies, free haircuts, new coats, sneakers, and gifts during the holiday season. During the 2016 holiday season Firefighters and Friends distributed gifts to more than 4,000 children in Northern Virginia.
Willie is the recipient of several awards which include the 2006 Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department Firefighter of the Year, 2007 Fairfax County "Onthank Award", 2012 Rotary Club of Tysons Corner-Citizen of the Year, 2013 Alexandria's Living Legends Award and 2014 recipient of Leadership Fairfax Kate Hanley Public Service Award.
Willie has been engaged with Alexandria's non-profit community where he serves on the boards of Senior Services of Alexandria, First Night Alexandria, and the Board of Trustees for Operation Warm which is the largest nonprofit coat distributor in the US. A single father of two grown children, Willie resides in the Del Ray neighborhood.
