What is ChildThrive?
The Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) provides residents of Brent Place with parenting and tutoring groups, information and referral, educational workshops and special events for the children. In an effort to expand these services and enhance the well-being of the families who live there, DCHS partnered with AmeriCorps to create ChildThrive! – a program that offers a variety of additional services to Brent Place residents.
ChildThrive! seeks to benefit children by helping parents find employment, get domestic violence counseling, sign up for public assistance and study for citizenship. The program also helps children by offering additional educational support and recreational activities.
Services are provided by six AmeriCorps members; DCHS staff from programs including Child Welfare Services, the Workforce Development Center, the School Age Prevention Program; and individuals from local non-profits.
ChildThrive! is dedicated to serving the over 200 families residing in Brent Place, a diverse, multi-ethnic high-rise, located in Alexandria, Virginia. Our purpose is to create, develop and implement empowerment programs and services that will directly impact the residents we serve. We will work closely with our community of residents, staff, local organizations and leaders to assist families and youth in the areas of education, health, financial literacy, domestic violence awareness, employment and job training, school support and recreation. Our goal is to positively influence the community within Brent Place so that Brent Place can positively influence the community around it.
