SNAP Double Dollars Program

The SNAP ( Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps) Double Dollar Program allows SNAP customers who visit the Old Town Farmers’ Market, and other participating markets, to receive up to $20 in double dollars to purchase eligible food products at the Market. The Double Dollar Program is an incentive for families to shop at farmers’ markets where they can access healthier, locally grown foods.

Program Benefits

Research shows that low-income households participating in SNAP Double Dollars obtain more nutrients, like proteins and an array of essential vitamins and minerals for their home food supply. Approximately 4,400 Alexandria families live with food insecurity and receive SNAP benefits. Double Dollars helps these vulnerable families stretch their food dollars. This initiative also helps increase the customer base at the Market, creating an additional source of revenue for the vendors.

Donate

Double Dollars has been operating at the Old Town Farmer’s Market since 2013. We need your help to reach our goal of $5,000 to continue to make local, healthy and delicious food more accessible to those with food insecurity. Donation proceeds pay for the match incentive, help boost the local economy and improve the lives of local farmers. We cannot meet our goal without the involvement of the community.

All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of federal and state law. Donations can be made online by credit or debit card.

To donate by check, make checks payable to SNAP Double Dollar Incentive Program and send to:

Apply online, or download an application from the ACPS Meal Applications page. Applications will be processed in a manner that reflects the applicant’s unique circumstance. For example, students with parents or guardians who are not receiving income must indicate their income as zero ‘0’ or leave the field blank. If your household has applied this school year and was denied benefits, you must submit documentation (such as proof indicating you are affected by the government shutdown, recent pay stubs, etc.) Families affected by the shutdown are urged to contact ACPS School Nutrition Services should their circumstance be remedied by a return to work or restoration of pay for a furlough period.
