AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN 2021 CHILD TAX CREDIT
The Child Tax Credit is a tax benefit to help families who are raising children. Through the American Rescue Plan, the tax credit has increased from $2,000 per child in 2020 to $3,600 for each child under age 6 and $3,000 for each child aged 6 to 17. To get money to families sooner, the IRS will send you half of your 2021 Child Tax Credit this year, starting in July. It will be broken up into monthly payments, which means payments of up to $300 per child under age 6 and $250 per child ages 6 to 17. You will get the remainder of the credit when you file your taxes next year.
Nearly all families with children will qualify. Families earning $150,000 for two parent households and single parents making more than $112,500 may receive a smaller credit or may not qualify. You — or your spouse, if married filing a joint return — must have a Social Security number (SSN) or an IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
Advance Child Tax Credit payments will be made for each qualifying child who has an SSN that is considered valid for employment in the United States.
Use the IRS Child Tax Credit Eligibility Assistant to see if you are eligible.
HOW TO RECEIVE PAYMENTS
FAMILIES THAT FILED TAX RETURNS
If you are a filer but have not filed a 2019 or 2020 tax return, file soon! If you already filed for 2019 or 2020, or you signed up to receive a stimulus check, you do not need to do anything to receive payments.
FAMILIES THAT DIDN’T FILE TAX RETURNS
If you have eligible children and did not file taxes because you did not work or earned too little, you may still be eligible to receive the Child Tax Credit.
Non-tax filers with children who did not sign up to receive a previous stimulus check must sign up to receive payments using the easy non-filer sign up tool.
