Fuel Assistance Application Deadline Near

Applications for fuel assistance from the Virginia Department of Social Services’ (VDSS) Energy Assistance Program are being accepted now through Friday, Nov. 9. Families and individuals can apply in person at the Department of Community and Human Services, 2525 Mt. Vernon Ave., or online at https://commonhelp.virginia.gov/access/.

To qualify for Fuel Assistance, a one-person household’s maximum gross monthly income cannot exceed $1,211. For a household of four, the maximum gross monthly income level is $2,498.

The Fuel Assistance Program assists with various types of energy sources, including electricity, natural and liquid propane gas, oil, kerosene, coal and wood. VDSS’ Energy Assistance Program is funded by the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) block grant. LIHEAP provides funds to states to assist low-income households in meeting their home energy needs.

Virginia Energy Assistance Fuel (Heating) Program

Provides heating assistance during the winter months to income-eligible households. Assistance includes:

  • Payment of heating bills
  • Repair of heating equipment
  • Delivery of oil, etc.

Apply for this and other benefits on-line at  CommonHelp.  Heating assistance Applications are accepted from the second Tuesday in October until the second Friday in November.  For more information, call 703.746.5700.

Virginia Energy Assistance Cooling Program

Provides cooling assistance to income-eligible households with a senior 60 years of age or older, a child under the age of six or a permanently and totally disabled individual.  Apply for this and other benefits on-line at  CommonHelp. For more information, call 703.746.5700.

Energy Share Program

The Dominion Virginia Power Fuel Fund provides financial assistance to income-eligible households with a heating bill if the service is in danger of being cut-off or has been cut-off. Call 703.746.5700 or call the Salvation Army at 703.836.2427.

Washington Area Fuel Fund

Provides assistance with heating payments for income-eligible households in danger of losing their primary source of heat. This program is administered by the Salvation Army, 107 E. Bellefonte Ave., Alexandria, 703.836.2427.
