Donate Toys, Gift Cards to Support Families Affected by Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault

Gift BoxThe Alexandria Domestic Violence Program (DVP) and the Sexual Assault Center (SAC) invite Alexandria residents and organizations to support families affected by domestic violence and sexual assault during the upcoming holiday season by contributing gift cards or unwrapped new toys.

One in five women and one in 71 men will be raped at some point in their lives. On average, 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States -- that’s more than 12 million people over the course of a year.

“Experiencing trauma like this and having one’s children directly or indirectly affected by this kind of violence impacts families on many dimensions, especially their economic standing,” says DVP Community Services Specialist Yeme Mehari. “Many times, these are the only toys or gifts the families will be receiving.”

DVP and SAC staff will present the gifts during the Children’s Holiday Party, an event the two programs sponsor together each year. The aim of the event is to provide the families served by the programs respite from financial, emotional and psychological burdens that come with the holiday season, says Mehari.

In addition to individual gifts, organizations and faith-based groups also have the option to sponsor a toy drive or giving tree. If interested, email Magdalia.Martinez@alexandriava.gov or call 703.746.4911.

If interested in donating individual gifts or gift cards, read or download a PDF list of gift suggestions for toys by age and gift card recommendations. Donations must be received by December 13, and all toys should be unwrapped. To drop off donations, call the Domestic Violence Hotline at 703.746.4911 to ensure staff are present at the drop-off location.
