Sexual Assault Center Hosting Spanish Language Support Group for Women

DCHS CONNECT FEATURE

SAC Support Group Graphic - Spanish - ESFebruary 12, 2021--The City of Alexandria Sexual Assault Center is hosting a nine-week virtual support group for Spanish-speaking women who are survivors of sexual assault beginning March 4.

During a crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic, the risk for sexual assaults increases and may happen at higher rates. Survivors tend to have a sense of decreased capacity to reach out for help or are heavily-laden with shame, and support groups offer a safe, non-threatening setting for survivors to talk about and process their feelings with others who have experienced the same trauma.

For more information or to register, email gloria.saez@alexandriava.gov or call 703.850.9426. Participants are asked to register by February 22 and schedule an intake call one week prior to the first session on March 4. For dates and times, view or download a flyer in English about the support group. Access online information about the group in Spanish.

The Sexual Assault Center is also hosting a support for survivors of sexual abuse who identify as male, with a focus on building a safe experience to minimize retraumatization and promote healing. The six-week group begins February 22; participants are asked to register by emailing gloria.saez@alexandriava.gov and schedule an intake call one week prior to that session. View or download a flyer about the group.

In addition to the support groups, the Sexual Assault Center also invites survivors and co-survivors to register for a virtual yoga event on Saturday, February 20, at 10 a.m. The event offers survivors at any place in their journey the opportunity to reclaim their resiliency through the practice of gentle and mindful yoga. To register, email julia.taylor@alexandriava.gov. View or download a flyer about the session.

The City’s Sexual Assault Center and Domestic Violence Program remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic. The hotlines are available 24/7, and advocates are ready to listen and help. Call 703.683.7273 for the Sexual Assault Hotline or 703.746.4911 for the Domestic Violence Hotline.  Confidential crisis support and chat online is also available at The National Sexual Assault Online Hotline.
