Summer Cooling Options for Alexandria Residents and Seniors
June 3, 2021--Looking to cool off during the summer? The City of Alexandria offers several locations as options to residents who may not have cooling in their homes, including recreation centers and libraries, as well as assistance for adults 60 years of age and older.
City locations open to residents needing a place to cool off include the following:
Neighborhood Recreation Centers (check the Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities website for each location’s amenities and program hours)
Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe St.)
Leonard “Chick” Armstrong Recreation Center (25 West Reed Ave.)
Lee Center (1108 Jefferson St.)
Mount Vernon Recreation Center (2701 Commonwealth Ave.)
Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center (1108 Jefferson St.)
Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Ave.)
William Ramsay Recreation Center (5650 Sanger Ave.)

During periods of extreme heat, the City offers cooling centers to residents at the Neighborhood Recreation Center locations listed above, along with expanded hours, additional resources and support for those in need. Due to COVID-19 prevention mandates, however, access to City recreation centers normally available to the public may be reduced. Residents are encouraged to sign up for the City’s free eNews service to receive news releases, which includes vital emergency alerts, for updates during those times.

For adults 60 years of age and older who live in the City of Alexandria, the Senior Cool Care Program offers a cooling fan and other assistance to seniors who meet income and other guidelines. Call 703.746.5999 to find out if you are eligible.
