Career Pathway Training Opportunities


Refugee Career Pathways Program - WDC, in conjunction with Upwardly Global, are offering services and resources to refugees, asylees and those with Special Immigrant Visas, including:

  • Career planning with an Upwardly Global advisor
  • Access to Upwardly Global trainings, events and activities
  • Up to $2500 in scholarship funds that can be used for qualifying expenses like training, reskilling courses or certification exam fee
  • Access to WDC’s broad range of services, including trainings, public benefits and more 

Eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • A Virginia resident who has arrived in the U.S. within the last five years
  • Registered with Upwardly Global and WDC, or agree to register
  • A refugee, SIV or asylee (approved asylum status)
  • Have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from outside the U.S.
  • Have some professional experience outside the U.S.
  • Have not worked in your professional field in the U.S.
  • Possess adequate computer skills and intermediate+ English language skills

Medical and Groundsman Training Programs - WDC, in conjunction with Alexandria City Public Schools Adult Training Center, are offering training programs for Certified Medical Administrative Assistant, Certified Pharmacy Technician and Energy Career Pathway. Eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • City of Alexandria resident
  • U.S. Citizen or lawfully eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Meet income eligibility

Culinary Arts Program  - WDC, in conjunction with Together We Bake and D.C. Central Kitchen , are offering a culinary arts program. Eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • City of Alexandria resident
  • 18 years or over
  • In compliance with the provisions of the Military Selective Service Act
  • U.S. Citizen or lawfully eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Meet income eligibility

STEM Program (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Program) - A 5 Week Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) “A+” Certification training at GMU for youth and young adults with disabilities. Eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • City of Alexandria resident
  • Youth or Young Adult ages 16-24
  • U.S. Citizen or lawfully eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Meet income eligibility

Jiffy Lube Program

Jiffy Lube has partnered with WDC to implement a training program that will lead to employment. The organization will train individuals through their private university, while working at a local at a local Jiffy Lube. Eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • City of Alexandria resident
  • U.S. Citizen or lawfully eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Meet income eligibility
  • GED or high school diploma by June 2016
  • Drivers license or learners permit
  • 18 years of age (willing to accept younger if individual has a license)
  • Highly motivated and willing to learn
