The County Health Rankings ranks the overall health of nearly every locality in all 50 states, using a standard method to measure people’s health and how long they live. Locality health was ranked on two sets of measures: health outcomes (length and quality of life); and weighted health factors [health behaviors (30%), access to and quality of clinical care (20%), social and economic factors (40%), and the physical environment (10%)].
The County Health Rankings is a way to view how social determinants (e.g., physical environment, socioeconomic factors, etc) influence population health. It is important to remember that the rankings are for population health – while Alexandria ranks high in Virginia, overall, there are numerous groups who do not enjoy the health of the population as a whole. The Alexandria Health Department and its partners continuously strive to address and correct the health inequities; by doing so, this will further improve our overall population health.
