Plan Your Visit to Gadsby's Tavern Museum

Gadsby's Tavern Museum is located in Old Town Alexandria, near many shops, restaurants, and other museums and historic sites. Alexandria is half-way between Washington, D.C. and Mount Vernon. During open hours, guests are welcome to walk through anytime with a self-guided tour. Guided tours are offered at select times throughout the day.

Museum Hours & Tours

November to March:
Wednesday to Saturday: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Guided Tours: 1 p.m., 3 p.m.)
Sunday: 1 - 4 p.m. (Guided Tours: 1 p.m., 3 p.m.)
Monday and Tuesday: Closed
Closed: New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas

April to October:
Tuesday to Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Guided Tours: 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m.)
Sunday and Monday: 1 - 5 p.m. (Guided Tours: 2 p.m., 4 p.m.) 

Self-Guided Tours: Experience the museum independently at your pace! Groups of 9 or less may arrive at any time during the museum’s open hours to tour through the two buildings. Each room provides thought-provoking questions and interactive, hands-on, objects that interest and engage all ages. Last tour entry is 15 minutes prior to closing.

Guided Tours: In-depth guided tours are available throughout each day. Space is limited to provide for a more interactive experience with your guide. Tickets are available on a first come first serve basis.   

Note that some tour times are not available due to special events at the museum. Please call in advance or check the homepage for more information.

Adults: $5.00
Children (ages 5 -12): $3.00
Children under 5 are free with a paying adult.
Discounts are available to AAA Members and to visitors who have dined at Gadsby's Tavern Restaurant.

Admission is free for members of the  Gadsby's Tavern Museum Society, AAM members,  HHMC member organizations, and Alexandria City Employees.

Group Services

Group tours are offered by reservation at the discounted rate of $4 per person. Tours led by a costumed guide are $5 per person and after-hours lantern tours with a costumed guide are $6 per person. In order to receive the group rate, tours must include 10 or more people, be scheduled at least two weeks in advance of the tour date, and pay in full before day of arrival. For group packages,  contact the Curator of Education.

Accessibility

The Museum is not wheelchair accessible beyond the first floor. The City of Alexandria complies with the terms of ADA. An individual with a disability who wishes to request a reasonable accommodation may contact the Museum at 703.746.4242 at least one day prior to visit.

Museum Shop

The Museum Shop at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum offers a wide variety of gifts and merchandise associated with the tavern and historic Alexandria. Products include private label wine, holiday ornaments, children’s items and a large selection of books related to taverns in America. Additional merchandise is available online from The Alexandria Shop.

Directions & Parking 

Metered Parking is available on North Royal Street, with two or three hour parking on nearby residential streets. Parking regulations are strictly enforced. There are also convenient  parking garages nearby. 

From Washington, D.C., and National Airport
Take the George Washington Parkway south, past the airport, into Alexandria. The Parkway becomes Washington Street in the City. Go about a mile, past Queen Street, and turn left on Cameron Street, opposite Christ Church. Go three blocks and turn right on North Royal Street. Gadsby's Tavern Museum is located on the right, next to Gadsby's Tavern Restaurant.

From I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway)
Take the US Route 1 North exit (first exit on the Virginia side of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge). Follow Route 1 (Patrick Street) about one mile. Turn right on King Street, go six blocks, and turn left onto North Royal Street. Gadsby's Tavern Museum is located at the end of the block, on the left, at the corner of North Royal and Cameron Streets.

By Metro
Take the yellow or blue line half block to King Street. Turn right (east) on King Street and walk down hill about 1 1/2 miles to North Royal Street. Turn left, and Gadsby's Tavern Museum will be on your left near the end of the block. Or take the  FREE King Street Trolley to King and Royal Streets.

By Train
Take Amtrak or Virginia Railway Express to Alexandria's Union Station (across the tracks from King Street Metro station). Upon exiting the train station, walk to your right to King Street and follow directions from Metro.
