Welcome to the Office of Housing
A portion of the City's housing activities are funded through annual grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) via its Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and Home Investment Partnerships (HOME) program. The Office of Housing also works with housing programs that are funded and/or administered by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA).
City Recognizes April as Fair Housing Month
In recognition of the passage of the federal Fair Housing Act in 1968, the month of April has been declared Fair Housing Month. The Office of Housing is sponsoring a number of activities promoting the understanding of fair housing. These include:
- A training for condominium communities and homeowners associations on how to comply with the federal Fair Housing Act and Virginia’s Fair Housing Law. Click here to learn more.
- A fair housing poster contest for Beauregard-area elementary school students. Click here to learn more.
- An apartment managers’ seminar to provide Virginia fair housing certification for property managers. To register, contact Juanita Norwood at 703-746-4990 or email@example.com.
The Office of Housing conducts fair housing testing in different segments of Alexandria’s housing market to determine the potential presence of discriminatory sales, leasing and/or lending practices. To learn more, please read about our Fair Housing Testing Program. Staff also provide training on federal, state and local fair housing laws to real estate and property management companies upon request.
