This summer, the City provied new bicycle lanes on Commonwealth Avenue beween Ashby Street and Mount Vernon Avenue.
In conjunction with the bike lanes, a green bike box was installed. A bike box is a designated, marked area at a signalized intersection that place cyclists in front of the vehicle queue. The box increases the visibility of the cyclists and allows them to enter and clear the intersection before motor vehicles.
How to use the Bike Box
If you are driving a car, stop behind the bike box at the point indicated by the adjacent sign. Proceed straight or left when the light is green, as usual. DO NOT wait in the green box.
If you are on a bicycle and wish to continue on Commonwealth Ave, you have the option of positioning your bicycle in the bike box or staying to the right, in the bike lane .
If you wish to turn left onto Mt Vernon Ave, position your bicycle in the box, in front of any cars that may be present.
If no cars are present, position your wheels on the two lines that accompany a small bike symbol in the bike box. This is the optimum position for your bicycle to trigger the light.
If other bicycles are present, it is OK to be side-by-side in the bike box while waiting for the light.
