Arlandria Action Plan Advisory Group Held “Status of Implementation Open House”
On June 20, the Arlandria Action Plan Advisory Group held their second annual “Status of Implementation Open House.” City staff and Advisory Group members updated the public on implementation efforts for the Four Mile Run Park Expansion project, infrastructure projects, development activities, and business retention and recruitment efforts. Attendees participated in a group exercise to identify and help prioritize Plan implementation activities that could revitalize the community and influence future Arlandria-related Capital Improvement Projects. The group selected potential priorities for implementation, including Phase 2 of the Four Mile Run Park Expansion project, upgrades to the new Four Mile Run Park Community Building, interpretive signage, area lighting, street trees, bicycle safety improvements (such as sharrows, signage, and bike lanes), public art, intersection improvements, business retention and recruitment, aesthetic improvements (such as banners and landscaping), and developing a unified character for the community. The Advisory Group will refine Plan priorities and staff plans to docket it for City Council consideration this fall.
Virginia Department of Transportation Opens New Section of Mount Vernon Bike Trail
Last week, the Virginia Department of Transportation opened the new section of the Mount Vernon Bike Trail through Jones Point Park. The trail section winds under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, linking up to Union Street in Old Town Alexandria on the northern end, and the trail along the George Washington Parkway on the southern end. Along the trail through the park, there is also a new bathroom and water fountain, for those using either the park or the trail. The trail is wider through the park, with a special path on the side for pedestrians and joggers.
Meals on Wheels Begins Weekend Delivery
Beginning July 14, home-bound seniors in Alexandria, who are Meals on Wheels recipients, will receive prepared meals on Saturdays in addition to the regular weekday meals. The addition of Saturday meals is made possible through funds from the City’s Division of Aging and Adult Services and through private donations to Senior Services of Alexandria, which operates the program under contract with the City. The Division of Aging and Adult Services, part of the Department of Community and Human Services, is the City’s Area Agency on Aging and is the only one in the state that offers meals on weekends.
Alexandria Library Continues 75th Anniversary Events and Provides Relief from Heat During Extended Power Outages
Continuing its celebratory 75th year as a public institution, Alexandria Library kicks off its "Take Your Library With You," travel postcard campaign that allows patrons to share their vacation spots and reads as they sightsee, cruise and trek out to various destinations around the world this summer. Accessible at any of the Library's four branches, the brightly-themed postcards can also be found at participating businesses that have joined this community-centered initiative. Postcards will be put on display and destinations will be highlighted on world maps at the branches for library users to discover more about their neighbors this season. As the summer's climate rose to 3-digit temperatures and many residents endured extended power outages last week, the Alexandria Library provided complimentary bottled water at each of its four branches. At Beatley Central Library, two films were shown. Patrons expressed their gratitude, finding comfort in the ability to check out a movie or book and enjoy a bottle of water while seeking relief from the heat.
