The project will be implemented later this spring and was developed as part of the Union Street Corridor Study, which called for more bicycle parking along Union Street.
Alexandria Library Wins $8k American Dream Grant from American Library Association
Alexandria Library has been chosen as a recipient of the American Dream Grant, which has been awarded to only 44 other public libraries in the nation. The American Library Association (ALA) selected libraries in 21 states to receive these one-time grants of $5,000 to $15,000 to add or expand literacy services for the adult English language learners in their communities. This funding, made possible by ALA and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, will help libraries build their print and digital ESL collections, increase computer access and raise the visibility of library services for immigrant populations.
Alexandria Library Honors Gladys Davis for More than 60 Years of Service
In honor of Black History Month, Alexandria Library pays tribute to Gladys Davis, who worked at the institution from 1947 to 2008. Davis witnessed much transformation during her tenure, including one of the nation's earliest Civil Rights sit-ins, which took place in 1939 at the Barrett Branch Library—an event that will be the subject of a C-SPAN feature in March. Visit the Alexandria Library page to watch a video of Davis being interviewed by Library Director Rose Dawson.
