Developer Plans Hotel on Eisenhower Avenue
The developer of Carlyle Plaza (the development parcels near the Eisenhower statue south of Eisenhower Avenue) has contacted the City about converting one of his previously approved office buildings into a large hotel to serve the National Science Foundation visitor demand. According to Jeff Zell, CEO of JM Zell Partners, Ltd., the floor area of the new hotel and height is less than the previously approved office building. City staff members have not seen any drawings nor have any details been submitted to the City. Zell’s first meeting with Planning & Zoning is next week. Hunting Point Resident Meeting at the Lyceum
On August 1, City staff joined several members of the Laramar senior management team at the Lyceum to meet with residents of Hunting Point on the Potomac. This was a meeting that City staff had been advocating for, for some time. Laramar is the Hunting Point’s management company. About 35 residents attended, and they raised several concerns, including 1) Laramar’s plan to raise rents; 2) the removal of a bus shelter on South Washington Street; 3) cluttered bike rooms; and 4) issues related to planned renovations and upgrades to the building. The meeting was also focused on what many residents believed needs to be better communication from Laramar. The meeting ended with Laramar agreeing to hold regular meetings of a similar nature with residents.
Construction Begins on Virginia Dominion Power Substation
Dominion Virginia Power has begun construction of a new power substation in Del Ray. The substation was approved as a Development Special Use Permit in 2009, and an extension was approved in September 2012. It will convert the high-voltage electricity from nearby transmission lines to a lower voltage to serve local homes and businesses. The new substation will be shielded from view by a decorative wall designed by a local architect. The new building, located behind Swing’s Coffee near the intersection of East Monroe Street and Leslie Avenue, is expected to be completed in 2015. Power service will not be disrupted during construction.
West Nile Virus Identified in Mosquitoes in the City
Laboratory testing of mosquitoes trapped by the Health Department the past two weeks has confirmed West Nile virus (WNV) in mosquitoes in Alexandria. WNV has also recently been found in mosquitoes in Prince William and Fairfax counties. This indicates that the risk of human WNV infection is increasing as is typical for this time of year. The Health Department is actively larviciding storm water catch basins and conducting public outreach to respond to the increased level of risk.
