Alexandria Health Department Receives National Food Safety Mentorship Grant
The Alexandria Health Department has been selected as the recipient of a $17,490 food safety grant from the Food and Drug Administration and the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) to mentor other local health departments. The mentorship consists of sharing methods to meet the National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards (Program Standards). Over the coming year, AHD’s Environmental Health Division will be mentoring Prince George’s County (MD) Health Department, Cape Girardeau County (MO) Public Health Center, and Cheyenne-Laramie County (WY) Health Department. Since enrollment in the Program Standards in 2004, Alexandria has met seven of the nine rigorous standards and has led the Commonwealth of Virginia in meeting the Program Standards.

Credit Rating Agency’s Outlook for Local Governments
According to the Washington Post, Moody’s, the credit rating agency, has changed its local-government outlook to stable for the first time in five years. An agency report states that the “new ‘stable’ will be an era of constrained resources, but the worst is over for local governments in most of the country.” Another agency, Fitch Ratings, says states are in their strongest position in years, although it is more guarded in its outlook for localities. Fitch upheld its negative outlook for local governments, citing growth in benefit spending.
