Update: Spring Paving and Ongoing Street Maintenance

The Department of Transportation & Environmental Services continues to focus on street repair after a challenging winter. The City has now filled more than 4,000 potholes since launching a focused effort on March 21. Spring paving projects have also added another 5.7 miles of newly resurfaced streets and associated sidewalk maintenance to the City’s network.  Recent projects include sections of Commonwealth Avenue, North and South Quaker Lanes, North Ripley Street and North Paxton Street. The summer resurfacing program will accelerate in July with plans to pave more than 40 lane miles of streets by July 2015.

City and WMATA Initiate Community Planning Process for Braddock Metro Station Redevelopment

On March 13, the Planning, Program Development and Real Estate committee of Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) voted to adopt the proposed 2014 joint development work program, which will include a request for proposals (RFP) to redevelop the Braddock Road Metro station in Alexandria.  In response, the City, in partnership with WMATA, has initiated a community planning process to define parameters that will direct the development of the site.  The first of two community meetings will be held on Thursday, June 26 at 7 p.m. at Charles Houston Recreation Center.  As the public process moves forward, updates will be made available at  WMATA intends for the RFP solicitation to begin in the fall of 2014.

Norfolk Southern to Hold Community Open House

The Norfolk Southern Corporation will hold a community open house on Tuesday, June 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hilton Hotel located at the Mark Center, 5000 Seminary Road. This meeting was first requested by Mayor Euille, in response to community concerns regarding the ethanol transloading facility located in Alexandria. The meeting will be an opportunity for residents to learn about the facility and possible future plans. Staff from Norfolk Southern, the City, and Virginia Department of Environmental Quality will be available to answer questions and address community concerns.

City Hosts Open Space Festival at Four Mile Run Park

The public is invited to the Alexandria Open Space Festival on Saturday, May 31 at the Conservatory Center at Four Mile Run Park, 4109 Mount Vernon Ave. The City is hosting an afternoon of family activities and an opportunity for the public to learn about and share ideas on Open Space in Alexandria.

Potomac Yard Park Update

Potomac Yard Park is a new 24-acre public park constructed by Potomac Yard Development as a requirement of the Coordinated Development District approvals for Potomac Yard. The first phase of the park, from East Glebe Road to Monroe Avenue, was completed and opened to the public in December 2013. The second phase of the park, scheduled to be completed this fall, will be a trail connection from Monroe Avenue to Braddock Road.  The third phase, anticipated to be completed in 2015, includes the construction of the stormwater management pond north of East Glebe Road.

U.S. Navy’s Premiere Country-Bluegrass Ensemble Opens 2014 Summer Concert Series

The City of Alexandria is pleased to announce the opening of the 2014 Summer Concert Season on Wednesday, June 4, at Ben Brenman Park, 4800 Brenman Park Drive, featuring country music by the United States Navy Band “Country Current.” The group performs a blend of modern country music and cutting-edge bluegrass

DMV2Go Scheduled to Visit City Hall

The City of Alexandria is continuing its partnership with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles’ mobile unit program, DMV2Go, with several visits scheduled this year. The mobile van, which is a full-service DMV, will park on Royal Street adjacent to Market Square from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 9. Additional visits are set for August 11, October 3, and December 8. The pilot program, launched by the DMV, consists of five mobile units that provide service to dozens of locations in Virginia. DMV2Go has served hundreds of customers in Alexandria since the beginning of its partnership with the City in 2013.
