City of Alexandria Offers Warming Centers in Response to Predicted Cold Temperatures

For Immediate Release: January 29, 2021

The City of Alexandria will offer warming centers through Friday, February 5, to provide relief from the cold for community members who may not have access to a warm shelter during the day. Due to COVID-19 prevention, access to City recreation centers normally available to the public for this use have been significantly reduced. As a result, the following facilities will be available as warming centers:

Weekdays:

  • Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe St.) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Dr. Oswald Durant Center (1605 Cameron St.) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Weekends and any other day when ACPS is closed for virtual or in-person schooling:

  • Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe St.) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • William Ramsay Recreation Center (5650 Sanger Ave.) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Ave.) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Leonard “Chick” Armstrong Recreation Center (25 W. Reed Ave.) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In accordance with federal, state and local health COVID-19 guidelines, visitors will be screened by City staff for COVID-19 symptoms (questionnaire and temperature check), and staff and visitors will be required to wear face masks, maintain 6 feet of distance, and wash hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer frequently. Enhanced cleaning will be practiced throughout facilities. For evening Winter Shelter information and other shelter options, visit the City’s Homeless Services webpage.

Alexandrians are also encouraged to check on neighbors, via phone or video chat, who may be at risk of hypothermia and keep pets indoors as much as possible. Visit the City’s website for more information on how to stay safe during the winter season and for other weather-related information.
