Alexandria Celebrates Building Safety Month with May 14th Virtual Training

For Immediate Release: April 27, 2021

The City of Alexandria invites the public to celebrate building safety, recognize the code professionals who help keep us safe, and receive free training at the City’s annual Building Safety Month Kick-Off event on May 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s event will be celebrated virtually.

This year’s theme is “Prevent, Prepare, Protect.” The free event features “2018 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) - Residential Provisions Simplified,” a training presented by Shaunna Monzingo, International Code Council (ICC) instructor. This training is primarily intended for building professionals interested in learning about the 2018 IECC Code design requirements once it is adopted by the Virginia General Assembly in July. Code cycles take three years to develop before the General Assembly adopts them into the Uniform Statewide Building Code. Architects, developers, code administration plan reviewers and municipal and private inspectors are encouraged to participate.

Participants who complete the training will receive .6 hours of continuing education credit, recognized by the ICC and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Registration is required by May 7 to attend the training session.

Building Safety Month is a public awareness campaign offered each year to help individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to build and sustain safe and resilient structures. Founded by the International Code Council in 1980, Building Safety Month is celebrated by jurisdictions worldwide during May. The campaign reinforces the need for adoption of modern, model building codes, a strong and efficient system of code administration and a well-trained, professional workforce to maintain the system.
