Monday, May 31 – City of Alexandria Government Closed in Observance of Memorial Day Holiday

Tuesday, June 1 - Alexandria Library Switches to New Hours 

Hours of operation for Alexandria’s Libraries will change effective Tuesday, June 1, 2010.

New Hours:

  • Beatley Central Library, 5005 Duke St.
    Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
  • Barrett Branch, 717 Queen St.
    Monday 1 p.m.-9 p.m.; Tuesday-Thursday 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. -5 p.m.
  • Duncan Branch, 2501 Commonwealth Ave.
    Monday-Tuesday 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; Wednesday 1 p.m.-9 p.m.; Thursday 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m.- 6 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Burke Branch, 4701 Seminary Rd.
    Monday-Wednesday 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; Thurs 1 p.m.-9 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Saturday, June 5 – Fort Ward Park History Group Meeting
Interested participants are invited to the Fort Ward Park History Group meeting at Fort Ward Museum, 4301 W. Braddock Rd., from 10 a.m. to noon. Workgroup members are recording family history, identifying features such as graves, documenting historical photographs including family and landscape images, and help with other projects related to the history of the site and in particular, to the African-American community that existed at Fort Ward. Monday, June 14 – Alexandria Marketing Fund Application Deadline
Applications are now being accepted for the Alexandria Marketing Fund, a program administered by the Alexandria Marketing Fund Committee. The fund is designed to increase revenues within the City by fostering public/private partnerships that promote Alexandria as a destination for visiting, shopping, dining and doing business. City Council appropriates monies for the fund on an annual basis and the Alexandria Marketing Fund Committee reviews and approves applications for funding. The application deadline for the second round of funding is Monday, June 14. Alexandria’s First Half Real Estate Tax Bills Mailed
The City of Alexandria has mailed bills for the first half 2010 Real Estate Tax and Refuse Fee to all property owners and/or mortgage companies. First Half Real Estate Tax payments are due June 15. Republican Primary Absentee Voting for Eligible City Voters Now Open
Absentee voting opened to eligible voters on May 7. Many Alexandria voters are eligible to vote absentee, and you may cast your absentee vote in person at the Alexandria Voter Registration Office, 132 North Royal Street, or by mail. The deadline for voting absentee in person is Saturday, June 5 at 5 p.m. For more information, visit or call 703.746.4050.

Nominations for the 2010 CIVIC Award 
The Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission is seeking nominations for the 2010 CIVIC Awards. The annual awards program recognizes the unsung volunteer efforts of Alexandrians who are involved in their communities and who have provided a valuable service to Alexandria in meeting recreation, park, or cultural needs. Individuals can nominate an Alexandria resident, group, club, organization, or corporate neighbor. Nominations must be received by Thursday, June 10. For additional information, visit
